Never Nerida by Shane Drummy

Eight year old Livia Karras survives a car crash that kills her parents and after saving her pet fish, lies down to die herself. But, 20 years later, she is still alive. After a rough life of bullying and changing foster homes, Livia prefers to keep to herself. A random night out leaves her pregnant but she doesn’t find out until she winds up in the hospital with a sudden allergy to water. Doctors think it’s a psychological issue brought on by past guilt but Livia believes she is being preyed upon by Nerida, the supernatural being that lives in the town’s water system. If Livia wants to save her baby, she must confront her past and Nerida. Can she do it?
I think Never Nerida by Shane Drummy is supposed to be a psychological thriller. It definitely deals a lot with the mind and situations that would make one feels frightened or vulnerable. I wasn’t super eager to read this book. It definitely had its interesting or dramatic moments but I wasn’t so enthralled that I couldn’t put it down. Aside from the supernatural being, a lot of this book is reminiscent of some messed up things that actually happen in real life. People can be terrible.
Although I didn’t find the content to be very engaging, the story was well written. It takes time to plan out a supernatural creature and fit them into the human world. Whatever Nerida is, she’s something I haven’t seen before. I appreciate the originality and the research put into the psychology of the characters as well as Livia’s aquagenic urticaria (her water allergy).
If you have an interest in psychology or like to see the supernatural blended with the human world then you should give Never Nerida by Shane Drummy a read. Just be warned that there are plenty of uncomfortable situations in this book so be prepared.
