The Neighbour’s Cat by J.S Ellis
The Neighbour’s Cat by J.S Ellis is a short, serial killer story told from the point of view of a cat. Dean has picked the woman across the road as his next victim, he studies her night and day. Theodore, the cat who tells the story, finds out and wants to stop him somehow. Problem is, it’s difficult to communicate with humans when you’re a cat.
Narrating through the eyes of a cat is an interesting and creative point of view choice. Cats are watchful and intelligent creatures. The story is full of everything Theodore sees, hears, thinks, and does regarding the situation. Only so much can be said from a cat’s point of view so the story is short in length yet packed with interest. I found myself routing for Theodore and hoping he could finally stop Dean from killing.
This story took me about 30 minutes to read. It’s a nice short story for breaks at work or a commute via bus or train. If you like murder mysteries, crime novels, or serial killer stories then this book would be something of interest. It’s a different take on how serial killer stories are told and I would like to see more books told from seemingly obscure points of view like this.
